This is based on an interesting study made by Ancel Keyes, which was conducted in the mid-40s to help learn the psychological effects caused by starvation in able to help survivors of the concentration camps.
A more concise recording of the work was later published in the two volume set of "The Biology of Human Starvation".
One cannot help but wonder what the results might have been if the volunteers had included women, as well as men, however.
