This particular booklet represents Osprey at its most workmanlike. Yes, it covers the topic in question, but it really doesn't go beyond that. How could have it gone further? Perhaps some wrap-up commentary on the impact on post-1918 developments in the relevant air arms might have been in order; particularly since Joseph Vuillemin, the French air commander in 1940, served in these aircraft. You can see how the concept of the "battle plane" would have seemed plausible to bright minds in Paris.

Even if "Duel" tends to not be my favorite Osprey series, I did find this this particular booklet to be quite worthwhile in terms of examining the characteristics of the two aircraft and the circumstances of their operational use.

A nice survey of the preeminent American air combat unit of the Great War, particularly in regards to the unit's activities in relation to the wider war. Also useful in terms of considering the use of the Nieuport 28 and the transition to the SPAD XIII.

The book is a good account for fighter development during the Great War.
The book is well designed and printed.
I found it thoroughly readable and better edited in comparison with corresponding Osprey Duel series examples. What is not enough for the book, in my humble opinion, are data illustrating how technical advance materialized in actual performance and operational strength in terms of pilot training, maintenance infrastructure and unit deployment. Such topics are present in the book but the idea how air-to-air strength developed in relation to the aerial reconnaissance and bombardment strength can be stressed a bit further.… (meer)
