Although the theme is very broad, many specific areas of study are targeted.

Each two-page spread covers a broad topic, such as coffee production, pirating, or seismic activities. The spreads include a few small maps or one large map, along with a concise written text. Large themes in the book include economic activity, political changes, ethnicity, and the international importance of the region. Words and concepts in Spanish are translated and explained. There is a wonderfully complete index. A few maps have colors that are slightly off and none of them details about anything but the topic being covered in the spread.
