This book charts the political careers of the Duke of Marlborough, his wife and their family friend Sidney Godolphin. it is an excellent companion to Sir Winston Churchill's four volume biography of the Duke which was far more militarily oriented. About equal weight is given to the three members of the trio, and has many quotations from their mutual correspondence. John Churchill was as bad a speller as his wife, and that does greatly surprise me. The book could have benefitted from a map of the fortresses of the French-Dutch Barrier.… (meer)
