Preschool students and beyond will enjoy this funny and clever book that retells the classic story of the Three Little Pigs. The tale takes place in the Southwest and follows the javelinas throughout their journey. The javelinas encounter a coyote (rather than a big bad wolf) that is a trickster and wants to eat the javelinas. Read this story to see who outsmarts who. Does the coyote get to eat the javelinas with red chili sauce?

Not much more explanation is needed than "The Three Little Pigs" recast as javelinas outsmarting a coyote. Well told, well drawn, well done.

This book has great illustrations and will appeal to children who enjoy David Shannon. It’s a mashup of Jack and the Beanststalk and the Wild West.

Everyone knows the story of the three little pigs, but now you're going to meet the three little javelinas (pronounced ha-ve-LEE-nas)-loveable, wild, southwestern cousins of pigs. Living in homes built out of tumbleweeds and saguaro ribs (from the fallen giant cacti), the first two javelinas are soon running from the hungry coyote, who had hoped to eat them with red chile sauce. And where do they go for shelter? Why, to their wise sister's house, made strong with adobe bricks.

I enjoyed The Three Little Javelinas because of its creative spin on the Three Little Pigs, The creative and colorful pictures, and the multicultural elements. The Three Little Pigs is a traditional tale that has been retold in hundreds of different ways. This book puts a different spin on the tale and makes it unique to a southwestern culture. This makes the story unique and engaging while remaining true to the traditional fable. The pictures in the book also enhance the story. The pictures depict a colorful pack of javelinas (pig-like animals typically found in dessert climates). The pictures give each javelina a unique personality, while the story doesn’t directly address this. Finally, the book has several multicultural elements. For example, some of the words are repeated in Spanish and the only human in the book is a Native American woman. These multicultural elements enhance the story and engage the reader. They also introduce children to different cultures and different ways of life.

I really enjoyed this book for many reasons. As it can relate to the story, "The Three Little Pigs," this book provides a cultural outlook which is very important for children, especially at a young age. At this age, the students are aware this story sounds familiar, however are able to see cultural differences, which can be a beneficial lesson. It provides challenges, friendship, and diversity. Within the book are also Spanish words where the students can use context clues to figure out what they mean. I feel this book would work great in a third to fifth grade classroom! I would definitely recommend this book to be used in a reading lesson!

"The Three Little Javelinas" was a very enjoyable book to read. As the javelinas journey through the desert, they face obstacles that they must overcome. The story was very engaging for readers. I liked this book a lot because it gives the reader an opportunity to see a culturally diverse version of the traditional story "The Three Little Pigs". While sticking true to the story line of the traditional version, Susan Lowell added details unique to southern culture, including Spanish-speaking characters and a Native American character that the javelinas come across on their journey. I would highly recommend this book for younger readers because it allows them to see the similarities/differences between the traditional version while also experiencing a different culture.½

I really enjoyed reading this book because the illustrations really grabbed my attention. When the targeted audience are younger readers, it is important for the story they are reading to be engaging. This book is really interesting because it is a different version of The Three Little Pigs. This can give readers a different perspective of the story they have heard many times. Even though this story has many similarities, there are a few differences that really stick out. There is a Native American women in the story, which represents a population that is hardly seen in children's books today. I would highly recommend this book.

It is very well written and even includes a different language as well as what the words mean. The art in this book is very well done as well. If you are looking for a culturally diverse spin on the three little pigs, this is your book.

This book was a nice twist to the three little pigs. It had several points of diversity for Native American groups and Spanish speaking groups. It also represents life on the dessert with different animals, and lifestyles and jobs for the groups that live there. There's also a hint of female equality represented since the female Javelina built the brick house. This book would be great for a discussion about diversity through the original story of the three little pigs. This book can be a nice way to spark conversation about diverse living styles.

A twist on the classic tale of the Three Little Pigs done in the southwestern regions of North America. It is the same basic story but with a cultural twist, including the pigs being javelinas, and the big bad wolf being a coyote.

This book is awesome to use with elementary school children to teach setting and problem solving. The story is based off the traditional "Three Little Pigs" and follows the same story line but instead with Javelinas. The setting is in Southwest America so it offers children the experience of exploring different settings and characters they may not have heard of before. Total physical response can be used to describe the setting for students who are not yet speaking English.

This is a book very similar to the Three Little Pigs. This story has a twist and instead of pigs it is javelinas and is set in the Southwest United States. The story follows the basic premise of the three little pigs as they go to different places. This is a good book to teach setting because it takes a familiar story but puts it into a different place.

This book is a spin off of "The Three Little Pigs" and tells the story of three javelinas building houses to protect themselves from the hungry coyote. This book is great for cultural diversity in the classroom to get the class to discuss cultures that may even be represented in that classroom. This is also a great book to discuss setting with. Students can physically show what the setting is like on each page of the story.

Summary: It’s the three little pigs but with javelinas and a coyote instead. The javelinas build their houses out of different things found in the desert. Finally, an Adobe house is what keeps them safe.
Opinion: This book is a childhood favorite of mine. It touches on a lot of parts of southwest culture, including Hispanic culture! It’s a great book for kids who love the desert.

"The Three Little Javelinas" is a fresh take on the story of "The Three Little Pigs." It uses similar phrases as The Three Little Pigs and could be used as a shared reading book due to the repetition. There is also some Spanish in the book which could be used as an ice breaker before a Spanish lesson. Setting is an important characteristic of the story as well allowing children to identify features of the setting they may not have experienced before.

"The Three Little Javelinas" is a very similar story to "The Three Little Pigs." The story takes place in a variety of settings, so it can be used to teach students about the settings in a story. One way that they children can identify the settings is by acting out how they would walk on the ground shown in the pictures. For example, one of the pages shows the ground with a lot of big boulders that a person would have to climb over. The students could act out climbing to show that they recognize the setting. On another page, the ground is flat and sandy. The students could act out how they would walk across hot sand. After reading this book, students will learn that a story can have more than one setting.

“The Three Little Javelinas” is a twist on the famous “The Three Little Pigs”. Javelinas are hairy, pig-like creatures. Instead of a wolf trying to catch them, a Coyote huffs and puffs at the Javelinas houses. This book not only teaches the traditional fairytale outline but offers a multicultural twist on the average fairytale. I think this is perfect for kindergarten, first grade and even a second grade classroom!

"The Three Little Javelinas" is a picture book that is based off of the book "The Three Little Pigs." The book offers a twist on a classic story by making it more diverse. The book offers many recognizable phrases such as "Not by the hairs on my chin-chin-chin." Phrases like this could help students participate in shared reading. This book can also be helpful while teaching about other cultures. One example, is a line that says "Sí, which means yes in Spanish." Other lines in the book discuss various plants, trees, and materials that all come from the southwest. The book is also about javelinas, which are animals that are native to the southwest. This book would be very beneficial to use while teaching about the southwest region.

This book was very good to introduce the kids to setting. As we did in class, the students could act out what the ground is like and what the weather is like. This book also shows how you can imitate fairy tales like the three little pigs to create your own original story. This might introduce a writing activity where the students create their own mock fairy tales. This book is also multicultural which can help students feel more represented in the text. Comparing and contrasting can also be introduced when this book is paired with other The Three Little Pig books of different cultures.
