This book is a good example of how animals overcome obstacles through getting hurt. It's a process every animal goes through and students can see that. It is tangible for them to understand because it happens in real life.

Juliana is sick and finds out that her tonsils have to be taken out! The idea of having an operation is scary, and her fear only gets worse as the operation date gets closer. She gains advice from her friend Storey and her parents throw her a party to celebrate her getting her tonsils out. The day of the operation, the doctors walk Juliana through the operation and, before she knows it, her tonsils are gone and she can eat all the ice cream she wants. She has pain for a few days, but when she goes back to school she wishes she could have done it again!

Juliana has a very scary situation. Operations are intimidating for a child, so being able to bravely go through with it is commendable. She feels comforted by Storey's advice, since she's had three operations before. Juliana cries, but she does what the doctors say. Who doesn't love being able to eat so much ice cream? She does have trouble with pain and swallowing, but that quickly goes away. The book is written like a journal, so Juliana is free to write all her thoughts and feelings into the story.

Winter's Tail is a true story about how a dolphin named Winter lost her tail. The story follows Winter's journey as she is rescued and treated. I like this book because it is a true story that includes actual photographs of Winter and her journey. It shows her rescue, her prosthetic tail being made, and her recovery. In the end of the book, after the story is finished, the author includes more information about dolphins, prosthetics, and the aquarium in which Winter now resides. I also liked that this book had a message, even though it was an educational book. The message was that even though Winter lost everything (her family, her tail, and her home in the ocean) she was still strong and showed that hope can help accomplish anything.

Nothing wrong with it; it may even deserve 4 stars. But I just don't like zoos, on principle, and can't adjust my thinking to believe that all this hoopla is truly a good thing. Sorry.

When Knut was first born, he was no bigger than a snowball. His mother was unable to care for him, so a bear keeper at Zoo Berlin, Thomas Dörflein, became Knut's foster father-sleeping next to the little cub, feeding him from bottles, and helping him learn how to play and swim. This is the true story of a little bear who needed a family, and the extraordinary outpouring of love he received from Thomas, from the zoo, and from people all around the world.

When Winter was a baby, she was rescued from a crab trap, her tail seriously damaged, and rushed to Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter survived, but eventually her tail fell off. Then Winter received a prosthetic tail. It was very challenging but now Winter is thriving and using her new tail with great command. Every year, thousands of visitors travel to visit Winter who has become an inspiration to adults and children alike, especially to children who are amputees themselves. And now Winter's story is soon to be a major motion picture starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Harry Connick Jr.!

A humorous and heartwarming tale of one pampered panda. With only an estimated 1,600 remaining in the wild and just 300 in captivity, the giant pandas are one of the world's most endangered species. A panda cub at the Wolong Conservancy is the first captive giant panda to be raised in a natural setting with no sight of humans. When he is two, he will take his first steps into the wild and will hopefully be the first captive panda to survive being released. This is why no chances are being taken with him. The conservancy's staff goes to extreme lengths to ensure his survival, like dressing up in panda costumes whenever they need to feed or care for him. Children will love reading about the humorous adventures of the young cub and his caretakers while also learning the importance of conservation.

An exciting reader series from NY Times bestselling nonfiction author, Craig Hatkoff!Junior Buddy is an adorable jaguar born at The Belize Zoo that has become one of their star attractions and somewhat of a local celebrity. He loves to perform for the crowds, including doing summersalts! More importantly, Junior Buddy is considered an animal diplomat at the zoo and is a critical part of their jaguar education program that involves teaching tons of local school children about the importance of conservation.

Summary
This is a non-fiction book about a baby polar bear named Knut. When he was a baby his mother could not take care of him so a man named Thomas Dorflein, a chief bear keeper at a Berlin zoo. The book tells all about this orphaned polar bear and Thomas in an easy to read story so that young readers can understand. Each page has photographed pictures of Knut and also has more scientific facts about polar bears next to the pictures. The story takes the reader on the journey that it took to raise Knut and the difficulties that Thomas faced each day. The end of the book allows readers to research additional information about polar bears and their habitats.

Personal Reaction
I thought this was a great book that allows young readers to explore non-fiction. It was wonderful at keeping me interested and involved in the story. Because the information is put together in a story it is less intimidating for a young student to gather information from the text. I enjoyed the real photographs of the baby polar bear and also the additional facts offered to the reader.

Classroom Extensions
1. The teacher could read the entire book to the class as a part of a unit on arctic animals and then have students write summaries on the information presented.
2. The teacher can copy pages from the book and hand out to students to pick out the various facts from each page given out. Students can then prepare a paper to present to the class.

Surgery can be scary, especially for children. Juliana has a problem with sore throats, and she finds out she has to have her tonsils removed. She is fearful because she doesn't know what to expect. After speaking with her dotor and talking to one of her friends who has had multiple surgeries, she feels a litttle better about the procedure. She hardly remembers anything about the operation, but recalls her down-time afterwards. Promises of ice cream, chewing gum and presents puts Julianna's mind at ease. She makes it through this uncomfortable situation unscathed, and looks forward to sharing her experience with her friends.

Anyone who has seen the movie, Dolphin Tale, knows the story of Winter, the rescued dolphin fitted with a prosthetic tail. Now, in the book Hope for Winter (and in the upcoming Dolphin Tale 2 movie), people will learn of Hope, another bottlenose dolphin rescued in circumstances remarkably similar to those of Winter's, and destined to bring them together.

In simple language, this paperback picture book tells the story of Hope's rescue and new life at the aquarium,

"When the cast and crew finished filming Dolphin Tale, they threw a party at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. They were happily celebrating, when they received an urgent call —a baby dolphin was on her way to the aquarium. She was very sick and might not survive the trip. A group of veterinarians, dolphin trainers, and volunteers left the party and started getting prepared. When the baby dolphin arrived, it was clear that every minute counted."

Back matter includes several pages of information on Clearwater Marine Aquarium, two pages of "Amazing similarities between Winter and Hope," and "Dolphin Facts."

Fans of the original movie, animal enthusiasts, and teachers should love this one.

Discussion topics: captive breeding, zoos, animal socialization (because Leo initially seemed to think he was a human. Just look at the pictures of Leo and listen to Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" if ever in need of cheer!

I loved this book! The main message was to never give up and that you can overcome any obstacle that life puts in front of you. One reason I liked this book was because of the pictures. They were actual photographs of Winter without her tail, the prosthetic tail that was built for her, and her trainers working with her. The pictures also had labels to go along with them, so the child knew exactly what was happening in the photo. For example, there is a picture of Winter and another older dolphin, and the caption is "Panama lets Winter trail just behind her, the way baby dolphins follow their mothers". The other reason I liked this book was because of how they personified Winter. They talk about how she was an inspiration that all people could relate to, that she would struggle which showed she still had the heart and energy to try to protect herself, and that she learned to trust her owners. Children need to understand that animals are living creatures and require help and love just like us.

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. I liked the writing of the book and how it was told in an engaging way. It told the story from where a dolphin named Winter lost her tail in the lagoon where she lived when she got stuck in a crabbing net. The book talked about the struggles Winter had to face not only without a tail, but also being taken away from her home and being placed in an aquarium in order for her to heal and get healthy again. I enjoyed the pictures because they are actual pictures of winter. There were several pictures of winter without her tail which served as a great visual. The message of the book teaches readers that with a positive attitude, you can make the best of every situation. Even though Winter was taken away from her home and placed in an aquarium in order to heal from her lost tail, she always had hope and showed readers that anything is possible. It also teaches readers that even if you lose something that you need on a daily basis, if you don’t give up, anything is possible.

Anyone in search of a heartwarming true story in board book form should look no further than this book about Knut and his handler/adoptive father. It covers a day in the life of this fuzzy polar bear who lives at Zoo Berlin. Adults purchasing this book may remember hearing about Knut when he was first brought to the zoo several years ago, but he will be a new friend for most children who pick up this book.

While it is a board book and therefore meant for very young children, it could even be used as an easy reader text, albeit a very short one, due to its simple plot and language. The photographs that illustrate the book are very cute, and they show what is described in the text. The images will appeal to anyone who loves fluffy baby animals. The story and photographs are sweet, but this true story is familiar, even to the youngest readers. It may not be groundbreaking, but it will please animal lovers and anyone looking for an adorable story to read with a child.

The Hatkoff family, together with co-author Dr. Paula Kahumbu and photographer Peter Greste, are best known for their presentation of the inspiring true story of Owen, a baby hippo orphaned by the 2004 tsunami, who was adopted by an ancient Aldabra tortoise named Mzee. In their latest picture book, Looking for Miza, the team turn their attention to a family of mountain gorillas living in Virunga National Park, in the Congo.

When baby Miza and her mother go missing, park rangers Innocent and Diddy begin the search, but it is Kabirizi, the silverback leader of the troop, who finds the little gorilla, and brings her home. Although not the strongest Hatkoff title available, young animal lovers will enjoy this informative picture book, illustrated with beautiful color photographs. Some information about threats to mountain gorillas - one of the most endangered species on earth - are included at the end.
