- Frédérique Hébrard, née Chamson, was born in Paris, a daughter of novelist André Chamson and his wife Lucie Mazauric.
She studied at the Lycée Henri IV in Paris and then at high schools in Versailles, Nîmes and Montauban. She graduated from the Conservatoire National d'Art Dramatique (National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts) in Paris in 1949.
That same year, she married comedian Louis Velle, with whom she had three children.
She took the name of her maternal grandmother as her professional name. She is best known for her screenplays Le Mari de l'ambassadeur (1990), Un mari, c'est un mari (1976) and Le Crime des justes (1950), but has also written acclaimed novels
such as Le Harem (1987), which won the Grand Prix of the Académie française, and numerous plays. She testified to being a victim of rape in the 2012 French television documentary film Viol, elles se manifestent, along with other prominent women, including Clémentine Autain and Isabelle Demongeot.
