INTRODUCTION

This original composition is written as a multiple percussion duet. The
instruments chosen are both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments.

PURPOSE

This composition is to help fill a void in the percussion literature for duets
written for multiple percussion instruments. While there are many mallet
percussion duets, few incorporate both pitched and non-pitched instruments.
The composition’s intent is to reflect “World Music” being inspired by

Northern Indian classical music, Trinidadian steel band calypso and Afro-
Cuban music. While using traditional instruments to perform these many

cultures of music would immediately signal to an audience member what
musical influence they are being exposed to, these instruments may not be
available or playable by most performers. The composition is not meant to
perform these styles to their true cultural form, but instead provide a
reflection. Similar artists that use this compositional technique are Weather
Report, Friedman/Samuels Duo, and Caribbean Jazz Project.
Instruments employed on this piece have been chosen so that they would
be available and playable by most high school/community college students.… (meer)
