This book probably deserves a higher rating than I've given it (at least a 3.5). It's a good, solid story with a reasonably flawed and likable main character and lots of good supporting character. It's well written and definitely a page turner. But, even more important, I could really relate to the main character. I could see myself in some of her actions, which made the book a bit hard to read at times.

But, ultimately, it wasn't a life altering read for me. It was simply a good solid read.… (meer)

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveway program in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book and was so thrilled to see a story rooted in Toronto and the surrounding cottage country. The plot is so relevant, with a familiar struggle to balance work, love and friendships as a modern woman, and would make a great romantic comedy movie - Netflix special, anyone? Makes me want to spend time with those in my life who feel "just like family".

Sophie Whelan is a modern day woman approaching her 40th birthday. She seems to have it all – a wonderful husband, 2 sons, good friends, and a fantastic job. As we get to know her, we learn that everything isn’t as great as it seems. There are problems at work, her husband is having problems with his company, there are health issues, and Sophie finds she is suffering from depression. While we are learning about Sophie’s current life, we also learn about her past life – especially her last year of college.
Basically, this is a book about a fairly normal modern woman living a fairly normal life. I feel there is a lesson to learn from this book – that, no matter how bad things in your life seem to be, life can get better again. I have seen this book advertised as humorous, and would disagree with that. It does have some “smile moments” – but it is not laugh-out-loud funny. If you are looking for a light, humorous story – this is not for you; however, if you are looking for an insightful book about modern life – this could be just right!
