I actually saw the movie with Patty Duke, Richard Thomas, and Sian Barbara Allen before I read the book. Usually it's the other way around. And usually I think the book is better than the movie, but I'm not sure in this case. They're both great.

Excellent read! One of the best gothic romances out there, even if the ending 'romance' was a bit forced. Very much an early, thinly veiled women's liberation novel, and well worth a read.
