- MARC ELIHU HOFSTADTER, author of Luck (Scarlet Tanager, 2008) and Visions: Paintings Seen Through the Optic of Poetry (Scarlet Tanager, 2001), was born in New York City in 1945. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz, writing his doctoral dissertation on the late poetry and poetics of William Carlos Williams. He received a second Master's degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of California at Berkeley, and for twenty-three years worked as the librarian of the San Francisco Municipal Railway, the city of San Francisco's transit agency. He is the author of House of Peace (Mother's Hen, 1999) and Shark's Tooth (Regent Press, 2006), and his poetry, translations, and critical articles have appeared widely in literary magazines. Hofstadter lives in Rossmoor, Walnut Creek, California with his partner, the artist David Zurlin.

This collection of poems is both a delight and a source of frustration! Hofstadter saw the paintings but we can only extrapolate from his words. (I had the good fortune to see the Chag Dai-Chien, and the Georgia O'Keeffe, and the California Impressionists, but how wonderful it would be to see the paintings again, as we read.)
His preface and his note on the paintings set the stage. Readers can have an "armchair" experience until they are able to go to the museum (or find a good art book with reproductions).… (meer)

An attractive mix of poems and very personal essays.
The sections: Art Epiphanies, Tribute to James Schuyler, High Steppin', and Shark's Tooth are ballast for "Brief Study of Beverages" (in memory of Kenneth Koch). Here in five pages Marc Hofstadter riffs on a wide range of drinking pleasures. What fun it would be to memorize! (and later recite, of course).
"Ruby KIng Chinese Bakery," "The Game, " are accurate glimpses of relationships.
The book's essays are brief, and, as with most of the poems, give clues to the author's background.… (meer)

I encountered many poems that spoke directly to me but "Seven Sumo Wrestlers in the Ocean" is the one that prompted a cheer: I 've seen the photograph. . .I wish I had written the poem!
