C. H. W. Johns (1857–1920)

I guess I was expecting more but this is a very limited comparison of the Laws of Babylonia and the Hebrew law. He examines fairly limited legal situations such as debt and incest and suggests that the Hebrew Law was more or less following the Babylonian law. And maybe even the Babylonian law was simply following the earlier Sumerian law. The book is really a series of lectures delivered by Johns and, I guess, in a short series of lectures one cannot get into too much detail ...though I was hoping for a clearer indication of where the code of Hammurapi was the foundation for Hebrew law ..and Deuteronomy in particular. But he doesn't really commit himself to such an open interpretation. I've donated my copy to an interested relative.… (meer)
