Korte biografie
There is a story, perhaps we should call it a "pious legend", that Willie Johnson as arrested for singing "If I had my way, I would tear this building down" in front of some Federal establishment in Texas. If not literally true, it could, and indeed should, be poetically true. And I would not want to be too near that building, as the power of his singing and playing might just do the job. This CD set includes thirty surviving cuts by the great Gospel-singer and slide guitar player. There are plenty of sound-samples of his art on the Internet, but this collection is invaluable. Another great (and blind) singer, Willie McTell, said of him that he had "a heavy voice - most sound like a preacher", which is true, in about the same sense that the Grand Canyon may be descriebd as a low spot in the road. In my own HARMONY JUNCTION iI have written a little about the effect of his music, but to the great majority who will never see that book I will simply say that I have been listening to his music for almost half a century, and I still shake when I hear it. I call attention to just two songs for now. His version of "Let your light shine on me" is unique in my experience, being the only instance i know of a tune starting delibertately slow, then kicking into high-gear, with a power which transcends that musico-technical device. But way beyond that is his "God don't never change", which is as much theology as any of us may ever need.… (meer)
