This is a thorough, if very wonky, history of how federal funding has impacted the shape of our transportation system. If there's anything to cull from this book, it is the argument that states didn't stop or curb building further highway infrastructure when their share of federal funding changed from year to year, so the additional auto dependence we've built was a priority at the local levels and not just because Congress threw lots of money at it. Unfortunately, that excellent point was buried in minutiae and unparsed data that didn't really contribute to his argument. Where are the academic transportation editors?
