Bedita the witch has a very bad day indeed in this amusing picture-book from 1971. Waking up one snowy morning, she finds only cold oatmeal waiting for her, and outraged at the world and at her fellow witches, she takes out her anger on her companions. From sending a giant snowball avalanching down onto the other witches' sledding party, to destroying their snow castle, she throws an epic temper tantrum, eventually falling over a cliff as a result of her shenanigans. Walking slowly home, she has time to cool off, and is greeted with some very welcome news - hot dinner being almost ready - once she returns...

Bedita's Bad Day is the first book that I have read from author/illustrator Eros Keith, although I see that he has illustrated a number of children's novels I currently have on my to-read list. In any case, I'm glad to have discovered it, as it presents a humorous story about someone who is not only having a bad day, but who is having a very bad reaction to their bad day. I feel that young readers and listeners will be able to identify with Bedita - some days are just so frustrating, and nothing goes right, to the point where one wants to stamp one's feet, and throw things! - and will also enjoy seeing the various winter activities being depicted. The artwork here has a lovely vintage style, and I really appreciated Keith's use of color, and his stylized figures. I will certainly seek out other titles illustrated by him. Recommended to picture-book readers who enjoy witchy fare, are looking for stories about bad days (and how not to act!), or appreciate vintage children's book illustrations.
