A nice refresher for the series thus far, and since I have a hard time picturing the characters, I found this to be a helpful visual guide as well.

This is a great book companion for the Kane Chronicles. I consulted this book while reading the trilogy and it helped me a lot since I only had a little background of Egyptian Mythology.

A fun little addition to the main series. I love these kids, though they really should have a little more adult supervision. The baboon does not count as a grown-up.

I love Rick Riordan's writing style and characterization. I have always enjoyed mythology and he does a great job of bring any and all mytholgy to life in a fresh and new way. I find the characters to be engaging and to feel really real. His characters feel fresh and diverse without feeling like he makes them diverse just to have diversity. He does not belabor the point of their diversity it just is a fact of who they are and yet anyone who reads his books can feel included in representation. I love how he weaves the mythology into modern times so you feel like you are learning something as you are being entertained.

You don't need to buy this if you have read all the 5 books. No additional information were given.

I found this book absolutely essential to reading the trilogy. I'm not really that crazy about The Kane Chronicles (compared with Camp Halfblood), one reason being the large number of unfamiliar gods, demons, and the like appearing from Egyptian mythology. The Kane Chronicles Survival Guide is quite helpful here, and that's why I've rated it 5***** when I only rate the actual books of the trilogy at 3*** each.

Exceeded my expectations. My 9 yo son insisted he have this as he wasn't ready for the series to be over after book 5. Since these books were the first novels he has ever read I caved in and was soo glad. The book wasn't just a repeat of content in the series as I feared but was a supplement, further explaining material touched on. The graphics and maps won his "cool!" vote.

Not much to be said about this companion volume to the main Percy Jackson series. Nothing new is revealed here, and quite a bit of the artwork has been already used elsewhere. If you're really in need of a Percy Jackson fix, this could be just what you're looking for, but don't expect anything that's going to blow you away. It's not bad, it just seems a little like overkill to me. I guess I was just expecting something maybe a little bit more.

**edit**

I may have sounded a little too harsh on the book. Riordan does go into a little more detail on some of the myths that his characters are based on, so that for those that aren't as familiar with the myths will have a slightly better understanding of them and the ways they tied into the Percy Jackson books. I think those bits would be helpful for younger kids who aren't as knowledgeable about the myths. And this is what I need to remember; that the book is written for a younger audience, and to them, this might be the perfect thing, giving them a little taste of their favorite characters right before the movie comes out.

If you're looking for a reference book about all types of paranormal creatures that go bump in the night, you'll need to look no further than this title by Julius Pemberton-Smythe.

Although nearly half of VAMPIRES AND OTHER MONSTROUS CREATURES deals directly with vampires - their origins, words for vampire, different species of vampires around the world, how to deal with vampires and how to slay them - information is also included on other creatures, such as zombies, chimera, ogres, and the werewolf.

The information is brought to life by the illustrations included, some of which are definitely not for the faint of heart. Those researching for reports or their own fiction stories will find the book especially useful, but even those readers just wanting to brush up on folklore, horror, and myth will find it fascinating.

This is a great addition to a home or school library, and teens (and even younger readers feeling especially brave!) are sure to find something new within the pages.
