The delightful biography of Eleanor Roosevelt introduces young readers to one of the most memorable first ladies of the United States. Beginning with her childhood, it continues throughout her life to her death. Educated at a boarding school in England where she spoke French, she came back to New York wanting to help those less fortunate than herself. This continued throughout her life and made her one of America's most beloved first ladies. Illustrations are a mix of mostly watercolors and photographs. The book is a step 4 book in the Step into Reading series.

Reading this story reminded me why it is important to encourage our children to have diaries to express their thoughts and creative ideas, even from a young age, and to date them. Not only that but writing and sketching ideas of nature and science are valuable tools to learn. Margaret benefited in the long run from having saved her diaries and sketches.

Review for copy of hardcover book.
This is an informative juvenile picture book biography celebrating the accomplishments of Lillian Gilbreath, the mother in the true story Cheaper by the Dozen. As a homemaker with 11 children, she applied her learning and creativity as an electrical engineer and psychologist to make home and commercial enterprises function more efficiently. By necessity she became a working mother in the workforce. Some of her innovations we still use today, but I don't want to spoil the discovery.
The writing is staighforward and clear. The illustrations make this a beautful book.

Francis Scott Key was a very busy man. He and his wife had 11 children. He was a lawyer and many people came to him for advice. But whenever he had a moment, he would jot down a line of poetry. He loved writing poems. When the War of 1812 broke out, Francis became even busier. He was well-respected and often called upon to help keep the peace as the war between the United States and England raged on. One fateful night Francis and his friend helped talk the British Navy into releasing a prisoner of war. But they couldn't return home just yet because the Battle of Fort McHenry was starting! If the British captured the fort, America might very well lose its independence. Francis and his friends could only sit on a boat and observe the battle. For 25 hours they watched in awe. What Francis saw inspired him to write a poem that would become America's national anthem!

What do you know about Frank Zamboni, the man behind the machine and the company? If you're like me, the answer is zilch. Clean Sweep in about sixty pages lays out a biography of Frank and his brother and the history of their company as it evolved from ice production, skating rink, to ice resurfacing machines

Family read-aloud party for the holiday weekend: Juneteenth, Father's Day, a birthday, and the solstice. (3 of 5)

A photographer and his dog visit Pablo Picasso, and the dachshund ends up staying with Picasso and becoming part of some of his paintings. I feel weird about a book where someone gives up their pet, especially to someone like Picasso, who is a #MeToo nightmare. I'm not one to cancel the work of artists due to how awful they were in person, but at the same time, I don't want to read about how Picasso was nice to dogs when he couldn't give women the same amount of respect.

I really enjoy the setting, the language, and the wonderful stylized illustrations. On top of that, it's a clever look at "going modern" and deciding where the boundaries are on technology.

In 1903, the Tweedle family buys a small, green, electric car, much to the disapproval of their neighbors. Electricity is new, and most people in the Tweedles' town drive gas or steam powered vehicles. In response to their neighbors' criticisms, the Tweedles repeat the chorus, "It's electric!, It's green! It's smart!". This is a story about technology at the turn of the century and also a commentary on today's climate crisis and people's unwillingness to change. Young children will appreciate this book for its funny moments and vibrant illustrations. Older children and adults will understand the book's fuller message. The Tweedles Go Electric would be a great text for teaching students about climate change and sustainability in the classroom.

Such a tough read. Aunt Pearl is about a lady who is homeless and goes to live with her sister and her two kids. Marta, one of the children, is fascinated by Aunt Pearl and wants to do everything with her. The author and illustrator did a great job depicting what is going on with a person who is struggling with homelessness. They show Aunt Pearl with the shopping cart of belongings, her clothes that are filthy and messy, and she was going through trash cans in their neighborhoods. It really opens the eyes of young children and discusses a harsh topic of reality that many people face. It allows the reader to feel empathy for Aunt Pearl and also see the innocence of young Martha. Pearl and Marta’s mother are constantly butting heads due to Pearls messiness until eventually Pearl keeps getting quieter and quieter and eventually is gone. Very empathetic read.

This adorable book is written in a wink-nod, tongue-in-cheek style, referencing the current concept of 'green' technology. It's 1903, and this smart little family decides to buy an electric car instead of one that runs on steam or gas. They're the equivalent of the first family on the block to buy a Prius. The illustrations bring to mind the French designer Poiret or the paintings of Toulouse Lautrec, and the characters are quirky and upbeat.

Review: on our way to Oyster bay. Mother Jones and her march for children’s rights.
This story is about 2 children’s point of view during the industrial revolution and their journey with Mother Jones to combat Child labor and stand up for children’s rights all around the U.S

I really liked this book. It shows a nice sweet story that is elegantly told in the point of view of two kids during the industrial revolution. A point of view rarely shown in kid’s books and often overlooked in history. This was a good way to connect students to the time period and really be in their shoes. As for memory I can see this story being remembered FOR the point of view of the children which is unique. However other than that there is not much going for it. There May be a internal theme of keep working on what you believe in but it is not addressed much. The art was well done very stylized with many colors. However, I don’t believe it did anything TOO well to stay relevant just above average and not much going on with the images to dissected with the class. Word difficulty was also average which prob wont advance readers vocabulary by much. Saying this however it does get the job done and can see this being told to a k-2nd grade classroom. The info given was interesting but interesting enough to be remembered by a child? Most likely not after a week or two especially with no strong theme backing it up. Overall a solid book that I wish had more but was in all terms good.
Memorability 4/5
Art 2.5/5
Enjoyment 3/5
Word Difficulty 2/5
Interesting info 3/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Best Use: Read Aloud to the class/Example reading½

A wonderful story letting us into the imaged days and nights of this curiosity seeing family from our real life history! You'll fall in love with little Mary and her never-say-die spirit that carries her from the classroom to her heart's desire, in search of the fabled monster's remains. Was it the popular choice? No sir... but what's right for one may not always match the status quo and that, my friends, can lead us to discoveries and dreams come true we've only dared imagine. A great addition to your reading list for a bit of edutainment this summer.

Really well done children's book that nicely educates about Dr. Sara Josephine Baker's life and contributions to public health, especially infants. It's definitely a conversation starter and can be used as a jumping off point to talk about a variety of issues that kids might see in the world around them.

I didn't expect to like this book because the bits of the movie I've seen seemed saccharine and preachy--and it is, but the characters are so well described that I really liked a lot of it despite that. It gets pretty heavy handed and tedious in parts of the second half, though.

I loved this book! It's a beginning reader, so the prose was fairly simple but the story was great. This book gives some background for Padme disguising herself as a handmaiden to protect herself. It's the genesis of all Padme/handmaidens shenanigans and it's great.

The book tells a story of mother jones and her fight for equal right for all children. The crowd through muddy roads and rain all the way from Pennsylvania to New York, in order to meet president Roosevelt and claim the right for children who used to work twelve hours six days a week. This will be a great book to read to students during a social studies class to show them that someone fought for their rights, and what they went through to accomplish those rights.

DR. JO is a beautifully written book about Sara Josephine Baker, a trailblazer in medicine. She lived in New York in the late 1800s, and after her father and brother died from typhoid fever, she vowed to become a doctor. This was easier said than done at that time as Medical schools did not admit women. Josephine was accepted to a Women's Medical School in New York and her dream was realized. Graduating did not mean she would be able to practice medicine. People would not go to a female doctor, so she became a health inspector for the city of New York. In Hell's Kitchen, Jo once again came face to face with typhoid fever. She taught the parents what to do to prevent this terrible disease as well as many other child diseases and ailments. She researched and developed practices, items and inventions for various problems she encountered. Jo helped to change many practices, and in doing so, ultimately saved the lives of 90,000 inner city infants and children in her practice in Hell’s Kitchen. A great book to read when studying health practices, women's rights and growth, poverty, biographies, famous women and more. A great addition to any school or public library. The publisher, Penguin Random House Canada, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions stated are my own.

I was unfamiliar with the life of Josephine Baker and this book was a delightful introduction that will engage young and older readers alike. The story was informative and did not shy away from the struggles faced by women in the medical field and poor immigrant families, but shared their stories in an inspiring and child-appropriate way. The illustrations were beautiful and added softness to a gritty subject.

I received this book through the Early Reviewers program. The opinions expressed are my own.

Sara Josephine Baker was a woman ahead of her time. This book does an excellent job telling the story of her life in a way that young children can understand.
Both my 4- and 6-year-olds enjoyed the story and illustrations. They learned that good health has a lot to do with access to good food and proper medical information. How lucky we are to live in an era that understands germs yet we should remember that we don't yet know everything about science.
Reading this book provided me the opportunity to talk to my children about the 19th century and how limited women's choices were. I hope my daughter will be inspired to work hard and help others like Dr. Jo.
