Cyrus Lakdawala is an International Master who lives in San Diego, CA. He has been teaching chess for four decades and is a prolific and widely read author. Much acclaimed books of his are How Ulf Beats Black, Clinch It! and Winning Ugly in Chess. Another entertaining and thorough treatment by Lakdawala. If anything he was too generous in his treatment of the Slav and there were moments when I felt he ought to have simply decided on one variation instead of offering multiple options. This was particularly true in the chapter on the Geller Gambit. That said, Lakdawala is always careful to explain each important move and subsequent idea no matter the line. He even offers a few of his own ideas in some of the less mainstream lines.
The Slav is a big opening. It has been popular at the grandmaster and club level for long enough that hefty body of theory has been developed around it. That this book is intended for club level players, the amount of patience, humor and explanation for each of the variations is impressive and extremely helpful. A chess book isn't simply read but studied over time and I have no doubt as I study each variation I can be confident about my level of preparation before a tournament.… (meer)

...and now I have a new favorite chess writer. Cyrus continually cracked me up as I went through his commentary on games presenting these variations. I loved the Socratic banter and the use of space in the book's design. Not only have I come away with a clear program of study but also a much deeper theoretical understanding than I would ordinarily have after reading one of these.
Though I don't play the Slav, I'm considering it if only so I can study his other Move by Move volume.
