INTRODUCTION
It is no violation of secrecy to give the outer,
objective details of the various activities of the
Great White Brotherhood, but the genuine
conservatism of the Eastern Councils until recent years
has acted as a barrier against such publicity as we
in America believe necessary for the growth of any
public or semipublic institution.
After twenty years' study of the doctrines and
principles, and a very careful examination of all
matters pertaining to the history of the Order, one
does not find a single prohibition against the general
publication of the history except in such minor
details as are closely associated with the working
or manifestation of some of the R. C. doctrines.
While these exceptions are few, although of vast
importance to the higher students, they have un-
doubtedly caused the subconscious attitude on the
part of all R. C. Brothers and Sisters that it is
safer, in the face of their individual sacred oaths,
to refrain from all mention of either the antiquity
or progression of the Order.

L’Ancien et Mystique Ordre de la Rose-Croix, connu mondialement sous le sigle A.M.O.R.C., n’est pas un mouvement philosophique de création récente. Sa Tradition fait remonter son origine aux Écoles de Mystères de l’ancienne Égypte. Comme leur nom l’indique, ces Écoles antiques regroupaient des mystiques éclairés qui se réunissaient régulièrement pour étudier les mystères de l’existence. Avides de savoir et de connaissance, ces mystiques aspiraient à une meilleure compréhension des lois naturelles, universelles et spirituelles. En ce sens, le mot « mystère » dans l’Antiquité, c’est-à-dire au temps des anciennes civilisations égyptienne, grecque et romaine, n’avait pas la signification qu’on lui donne aujourd’hui. Autrement dit, il n’était pas synonyme d’« insolite » ou d’« étrange ». Il désignait plutôt une gnose, une sagesse secrète, connue uniquement des Initiés.

Nació en Frenchtown, Nueva Jersey. Interesado desde muy joven en temas místicos y ocultos, relacionados fundamentalmente con los fenómenos psíquicos y la corriente del Nuevo Pensamiento, tomó contacto en su juventud con diversas personalidades del mundo esotérico, que posteriormente le conducirán a interesarse por la historia, las enseñanzas y la filosofía de la tradición Rosacruz. Trabajó como fotógrafo e ilustrador publicitario para varios periódicos de Nueva York, como el New York Evening Herald, donde además presidió un comité de inspección sobre los fenómenos psíquicos y mediúmnicos. Esta experiencia le llevará a fundar la Sociedad de Investigación Psíquica de Nueva York, organización que investiga e intenta dar un sentido a los fenómenos paranormales.Cabe destacar en este sentido su relación con May Banks Stacey (1846-1919), miembro de la masonería de adopción, teósofa y rosacruz, de donde procede en parte la autoridad tradicional que la AMORC reivindica para su fundación. Gracias a su influencia, H. Spencer Lewis viajo a Francia donde según sus propias declaraciones fue iniciado en los misterios rosacruces en la ciudad de Toulouse.
Según el relato de Lewis, que para algunos autores posee diversas lagunas y contradicciones, los rosacruces europeos le encomendaron la tarea de fundar la Orden Rosacruz en América, lo que efectivamente hizo en 1915, dándole el nombre de Antigua y Mística Orden de la Rosa-Cruz, conocida internacionalmente por su acrónimo AMORC.

The style is, by modern standards, quite pedantic, and the coincidences sometimes even comical, but the overall premise of the book is intriguing, and will ring true to anyone who has an interest in mysticism and spirituality.
