Pierre Ryckmans was born on September 28, 1935 in Brussels, Belgian. He studied law and art history at the Catholic University of Louvain. At the age of 19, he was one of a delegation of young Belgians invited to China on a trip that included a meeting with Zhou Enlai, the premier under Mao. He toon meer spent 12 years in the Far East, where he became an expert on Chinese painting, calligraphy and poetry. In Hong Kong, he monitored the Chinese press on behalf of Belgian diplomats. He taught at the Australian National University in Canberra in 1970. He primarily wrote under the pen name Simon Leys. He criticized Mao's cultural revolution in his first two books, Les Habits Neufs du Président Mao (The Chairman's New Clothes) and Ombres Chinoises (Chinese Shadows). His other works included The Death of Napoleon and The Wreck of the Batavia. He died of cancer on August 11, 2014 at the age of 78. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder

‘Le bonheur des petits poisons’ biedt een verzameling van kleine stukjes, ieder zo'n vier à vijf bladzijden lang. De onderwerpen zijn gevarieerd, maar kunst –met name literatuur- en China lopen als rode draad door het boek. In ieder essay is wel een mooie gedachte, een fraai citaat of een pakkende anekdote te vinden. Bovendien heeft hij me op het spoor gebracht van een aantal nieuwe boeken, waaronder dat van Jean-François Revel over Proust en de zeeromans van Patrick O’ Brian.
Nog meer boeken dus. Leys zegt daarover: ‘les livres sont essentiellement inutiles. On s’en doutait un peu-et d’ailleurs, c’est bien pour ça qu’on les aime tant.’
Uit de vele mogelijke voorbeelden een wetenswaardigheid over de Chinese keizers, een ironisch citaat over Sartre en iets over universiteitsprofessoren. Eerst de Chinese keizers: wanneer een hoge ambtenaar een verslag moest voorleggen aan de keizer, was het de etiquette dat hij een fout maakte op de eerste of tweede bladzijde. De keizer kon deze fout dan corrigeren en gaf daarmee blijk van zijn oplettendheid en zijn gezag, zonder dat hij genoodzaakt was zich door heel het rapport heen te ploeteren.
De academici dan: ‘de même que les gouvernements de certains pays hyperdéveloppés paient de temps à autre leurs paysans pour qu ‘ils ne produisent pas de beurre, ne pourrait-on pas subsidier certains universitaires pour qu ‘ils cessent d’écrire des livres?’
Tenslotte, Sartre: ‘Au fond la vie de Sarte fut une féerie permanente: il n’y a pas de position plus amusante, plus séduisante, plus originale- et finalement mieux recompensé- que celle de dissident au sein d’une societé tolérante, stable et prospère.’… (meer)
