Jane Lidderdale

This was an intimidating book, but well worth the time spent reading it. A valuable insight not only into the life of a fascinating woman of the turn of the century, but also into the publishing climate for authors such as James Joyce. I am a great admirer of Miss Weaver, her character is just what I wish mine to be, only I lament that she found her solace in the Communist doctrine instead of in God. Her brother-in-law summed up her life best at her funeral when he chose to read 1 Corinthians 13. He said, "She loved and she was not puffed up."

The book was very involved and long at some parts in describing the many intricacies of copyright, editing and publishing, other than that it was very readable. I will not keep it, because there are very few people in my circle to recommend it to and I will not read it again.… (meer)
