I think the writing and storytelling of this book are interesting, engaging, and appropriate for middle graders. element of the story, having the 12 year old sent into training as a concubine was pushing the envelope of tween fiction, but SPOILER when she works to defeat the evil jing tree and the family describes killing their own children, I found that excessively graphic, upsetting, and somewhat unnecessary to the story. I stopped reading and will not be recommending this title to young patrons.… (meer)
