The summary on the cover seemed intriguing, so I decided to purchase this book at the latest Friends of the Library semi-annual book sale. Overall, the novel was interesting enough. The plot follows the life of Eliza Sommers from 1843-1853. She is an orphan that is raised in the British colony of Valparaiso, Chile by a spinster and her rigid brother. She falls in love with Joaquin, who like many Chileans during that time period, decides to seek his fortune in mining gold in the hills for northern California. After months of waiting, Eliza decided to follow Joaquin to California. Thus, her adventures begin. The plot certainly has enough twists and turns throughout. The author, Ms. Allende certainly doesn't paint a rosy picture. The treatment of individuals of certain ethnic backgrounds was deplorable, and sometimes difficult to read about. Some of the scenes were pretty graphic, which added to the intensity of the novel. Without giving any of the plot away, in my opinion, the ending felt rushed, leaving some questions unanswered.… (meer)

When Marcus, the Earl of Roxbury learns from his sister that his nephew Julien is s set on marrying a certain Diana Mayhew he is not pleased. NOT AT ALL.

Not only near to penniless but is also the niece of a retired notorious actress .This clearly can't be permitted so he sets out to free Julien from their grasp.Initially mistaking miss Philippa Mathew for her younger sister and declaring he won't allow it.

Roxbury and Philippa are firmly set against each other.

Philippa has been responsible for her three younger siblings ever since the passing of their father and only an invitation by her aunt-in-law Bella to come live at her home kept them from being separated. Maybe Bella is not all the thing but she has a good heart and they have become a family.

The plot was similar to [b:True Lady|3219915|True Lady|Joan Smith|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1298600502s/3219915.jpg|3253915] by Joan Smith.but read like a slightly more serious version. Thats not to say "Notorious Lady" heavy reading by any means

Now there is something I have to adress. There was a scene in this book that had me mentally go "thats seriously not cool Roxbury" (he grabs her wrist and bruises her )I dont want to make light of it but on the other hand its not completely unusual in this genre that is no stranger to "punishing kisses" I have read much worse and does lead up to a scene that was very emotional and showed him to be genuinely sorry.

I just have to say that I have no idea who the blondes on the cover are as its expressely stated that both the hero and heroine have dark hair.

A good new author in the traditional regency genre and I will certainly read more of Dawn Lindseys books :)

Well written romance during wartime in Spain driving out the French. The story unfolds over a year span , Regina and Adam are the lead couple who we see put their personal lives on a back burner instead of pursing their relationship. They are wonderful people who really deserve the HEA at the end, author did a great job showing the toll war takes on family, relationships and a country.

Just reread an old copy and I see why I kept it. Loved it. Not your typical regency romance. Set in Spain during the Peninsular War. The conflict between the French, British, and Spanish is the backdrop but also an integral part of the story and very realistic. But it is an excellent romance as well. My only complaint is it ends well but rather abruptly. Needs an epilogue. But I highly recommend it. Wish it had been issued in hardcover, but most of these Signet Regency Romances were not. I'll be keeping this copy.… (meer)
