- Richard Lingenfelter was a professor of geophysics and planetary physics at UCLA (1969-79). He wrote several books on American Western history. From 1979 to 1999 he was a member of the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (UCSD). Lingenfelter worked in the areas of solar high energy emissions, gamma-ray bursts and supernovas (especially SN 1987a). He also served on such committees as NASA's Gamma-ray Program Working Group and the National Research Council's Astronomy Assessment Panel.
