This knitting pattern book has some really pretty garment designs. There are a couple that I would like to make for myself and there is one I want to make for my spouse as a gift. Several are not my taste, but the ones that are are beautiful. I love the cables. Mix of charts and written instructions.

This is the best book on knitting that I have read. The chapters on designing various types of garments are outstanding.

I couldn't recommend this more highly as a place to start for beginners who want something that looks good right now!

A lovely book to browse with a lot of excellent advice as well. Worth every penny.

Well-organized, beautiful, surprisingly improved update on what I thought was an unbeatable classic. I will be replacing the 2002 edition in my library with this one as soon as I can.

The patterns are mediocre at best, but the overall technique and instruction is impeccable (like most Vogue Knitting books, in my experience)

Some useful and interesting sections on sweater sizing and customization, and a few neat tricks scattered throughout. This is hefty for a reference book, but it's not really useful for much else.

There are a few mistakes, but there are lots of nice ideas and illustrations.

p97, emphasis mine: "Designer Pierrot credits the fabulously feminine styles his mother once wore as inspiration for his strict-but-sexy garments".

Ok, buddy...

There is only one design in here I'll be photocopying out of the book, the one on the cover. All others are ugly to hideous, ridiculous, or, if appealing (most of the lace shawls are indeed very pretty), look impossible to knit, requiring degrees of expertise, patience, and wealth I expect never to have.

I love this book. I've found it extremely useful for info on sewing, adjusting patterns and choosing material.
As far as I'm concerned, it's got all the information I need to get on and sew.

I just got a used copy in the mail from Paperback Swap, and I'm glad I didn't pay for it, because there are only a few styles I would make. This is for people who like their knitwear oversized½

The very BEST resource for a novice knitter. Great just to study when you can't actually knit!

This book is a real disappointment. The subtitle is "Classic knits from the 1930s-1960s" so you can expect some conservatism, but what you get aren't old patterns rewritten to modern standards; you get patterns that may be "slightly altered to give a more modern fit". Which means the most interesting patterns have modern lines and don't represent the styles of the mid-twentieth century.

Most (but not all) of the garments have the original photograph that appeared when the pattern was first published, so you can often see what was changed. Each pattern is written in the modern Vogue Knitting style so you know what to expect, and each has been updated to reflect modern sizing. You get about four sizes, so the very small and the very large are SOOL.

About half the patterns are for women, five are for men, seven are for babies or children, and the rest are wraps, socks, and gloves. Difficulty ranges from very easy to intermediate.

These are good patterns, but look elsewhere for styles that represent days gone by.

A very useful book to help you as you work on a knitting project that calls for techniques that are new to you. Contains clear photos, illustrations and descriptions. All the better since it's so portable!
