Marina Marazza

A wonderful historical novel set in Florence and following the adventures, trials, and tribulations of Gemma, the woman who married Dante. In some respects it is a story of Gemma's slow awakening to the brutal world of Florentine politics, but it also describes her love for Dante and her attraction to her handsome, violent cousin Corso Donati.

Filled with wonderful period details, the novel made me admire this remarkable woman, who endured persecution, exile, childbirth, and separations from Dante, but who came through it all.
