Capricia Penavic Marshall

I read Capricia Penavic Marshall’s book because it was the selection of a new book club I had just joined. Let me be more clear – I would not have selected this book in a million years. My usual genres are history, politics, crime fiction and spy fiction. So what did I think of “Protocol: The Power of Diplomacy and How to Make It Work for You” (PR) ? I was shocked - I enjoyed it thoroughly. It hooked me within the first 30 pages or so.

Why is it so special? First off, PR is very well written. The prose is masterful, and the structure is perfect. Capricia is a subject matter expert, having served as Social Secretary for President Clinton and Chief of Protocol for President Obama. She covers everything, and what makes the book so entertaining and instructive are the many, many anecdotes that she weaves into her 400 page book. She knows everybody so she also draws upon the experiences and stories she has gleaned from others who preceded her as well as colleagues from countries around the world. So are a very number of very funny stories like how Capricia greeted Mexico’s President Calderon at the White House (see the video). And touching stories, like Obama’s gift presentation to Elizabeth ll. And Obama with the New Town families. I also enjoyed the many little tidbits about dealing with government leaders from all over the world.

Finally, PR offers tons and tons of practical tips about meeting and socializing, things that can apply to your next door neighbor as well as the Prime Minister of India. I am pleased to say I have met an Indian PM; I only wish I had the opportunity to read PR beforehand.
