"Caltrain and the Peninsula Commute Service" by Janet McGovern, is a superb look at the commute rail service that connected San Francisco to San Jose, originally the SF&SJ Railroad in 1860. Southern Pacific took over in 1870 and in the 90s it became CalTrain with various owners including Amtrak. The commute service is currently run by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board but the future of diesel trains is in jeopardy.
