Research Interests and Background

I received my PhD in Political Science from Northwestern University. Prior to coming to Davidson, I worked as an advisor to U.S. Army TRADOC and US Africa Command. I was also a professor of political science at Washington State University.

I have conducted research on insurgent groups in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Uganda, Angola, Turkey, Colombia and Nicaragua and have interviewed members of the Taliban, the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), and the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). I have also done fieldwork for monitoring and evaluation purposes in Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Swaziland. In 2010, I published Inside Insurgency and have published articles in Political Research Quarterly, Defense and Security Analysis, International Studies Perspectives, and Africa Today.

My current research interests include the application of critical security studies to security policy in Africa, the changing nature of regimes, and conflict studies. My personal interests include running, music, good food and wine, and exploring the world around me.
