- Richard Minsky is widely acclaimed as a pioneering book artist whose work is collected internationally by major museums and libraries. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant and the prestigious US/UK Bicentennial Fellowship, awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts and The British Council. Richard is the Founder of the Center for Book Arts (1974), which has mounted over 200 exhibitions during the past 35 years, and currently offers 100 classes and workshops. He has lectured at many institutions, including Brown University, The London College of Printing, and Washington University.

I started this book thinking that I would probably just look at the pictures and ignore the text, but the subject was so interesting that I ended up reading the whole thing. Recommended for anyone interested in a unique take on book arts or on the philosophy of art.
Consider yourself warned – serious “book lust” will ensue if you even begin to crack the cover of this unassuming slim volume!
The art and craft displayed here is simply amazing, I honestly had no idea this level of detail and nuance was even possible from any commercial process. Heavily illustrated introductory text (15 pages) chronicles the all too short history of the golden age of commercial bookbinding: talking about the artists, their influences, and the processes used to create these covers. This is followed 143 nearly full size color plates of the most delightful book covers you can possibly imagine. N.B. – these are the actual hardback covers of the books, not the dust jackets that largely replaced them by WWI.
I am currently lusting for the three dimensional peacock feather of #2, the use of color to simulate depth in #21, the use of silhouettes and light in The Jungle Book of #30. You get the idea, for the most part you don’t even care what the title is, you just want to own the book for the art on the cover. I am reluctantly returning my copy back to the public library with explicit instructions telling them to NEVER let me see it again – otherwise I will begin an unhealthy pursuit of many of the book gems found within. Highly recommended read for all serious book collectors who love the book arts; AND all amateur bibliophiles who can recognize good art when they see it.
Any LibraryThing member who cannot find at least one book here they would love to own should have their membership revoked on principle. You were warned.… (meer)
