- Elisabeth Moltmann-Wendel was a theologian, journalist, and author. The author, who grew up in Potsdam, studied Protestant theology in Berlin and Göttingen after the war. In 1951 she did her doctorate on the Dutch theologian Hermann Friedrich Kohlbrügge. Inspired by American feminist theology, she became a founder of feminist theology in Germany and was active in researching and lecturing in this new field of theology.
Moltmann-Wendel researched the women around Jesus, dealt with the liberation of women and criticized male images of God. With her thesis on a woman-oriented understanding of the Lord's Supper, she sparked controversy far beyond her state church in Württemberg in the mid-1990s.
She had been married to the Protestant theologian Jürgen Moltmann since 1952 and had four daughters. She died in 2016.
