As a musician, I liked the story about his efforts. As a story, it was just OK. There were moments of interesting writing and the characters were fleshed out well.
Recently read Mozina's novel Contrary Motion. Read about half a dozen of the stories in this collection. Some of the stories lean toward the absurd. Several of the main characters seem not quite believable - even to themselves. Their lives somehow veered off of or never quite got on the track they expected to live. The stories portray a mixture of pathos and self-loathing - although maybe that's too strong. I do wish I had had more time to finish the collection.
started off a little slow & I am always sceptical of 1st-person narrators - Matt (the main character) seems to overwhelm the reader with his every thought. but as I came to know and appreciate Matt, I realized that's just the kind of guy he is. And it's both a blessing and a curse for him. I enjoyed this book. I have met Mozina a few times, so I was expecting something more humorous, but the novel fines the right tone between humor and the ordinary. From personal experience, I think the author is very much on the mark with the aftermath of divorce. I'm looking forward now to reading some of Mozina's short stories.… (meer)

In Tandem, a man accidently kills two young people. It was a foggy night, he had drunk too much, the tandem bike came around a blind corner, going the wrong way. Mike Kovacs knew he would be charged with manslaughter, go to prison, and lose everything. He was a well-liked professor at a small Kalamazoo college. (Based on the school my brothers-in-law and all their children attended!) Mike cleaned up the scene of the accident and hid his car. In fact, he purchased a duplicate of his car to drive while secretly repairing the damaged one.
Mike discovers that the victims were from the neighborhood, and that his ex and the mother of the girl he had killed had been in the same book club. He seems like a caring guy to Claire whose her marriage is strained by the loss of their daughter.
Mike’s one bad decision leads to a series of morally suspect choices. His outward life does not betray the secret guilt he carries. I found the complication creepy. It’s a dark book with dark humor, but is always entertaining.
I loved the Michigan setting. I read the novel in a day.
