An enjoyable dip into a different time. Nirvana interview shows that they were well into making pop music, Barbara Ellen showing perfect taste in the reviews. Plus an interviewing-popstars-in-the-pub feature in which all of the popstars refused to drink!

Not the finest of vintages, but enjoyable for Ted Kessler being completely wrong about Army Of Me.

This was a great collection of articles. Well done album reviews, and interesting interviews in between.

I found it interesting for two major reasons.

The first is, all the interviews were done by Brits, so the viewpoint is far different for this quintessentially "American" band that the UK embraced first. There's a lot more focus on trying to nail down who Petty is and what genre is belongs in (I still find it amusing that he and his Heartbreakers were initially lumped in with the punk movement).

The second interesting thing was the growth you see in Petty throughout these pages. He always remains very humble, but at first, he's just kind of interested in playing, getting some money, and women. Later on, he becomes a little more emboldened after taking on MCA—twice—and winning. Then he states his not political. But later, as he ages and has a family, he starts to move down that political path as well.

In the meantime, he picks up a few friends along the way, in the guise of the Traveling Wilburys, and brings back some old friends with the reformation of Mudcrutch.

Along with John Lennon, and David Bowie, I miss you, Tom.
