Jonny Negron

Selected Works 2012-2013 from Jonny Negron is really a disappointment for me. Maybe it is just too much mediocrity in one place, maybe it is just not that good.

Seeing his work periodically online in small doses it is easy to appreciate the concept of more realistic bodies in art and popular culture without paying too much attention to either the "style" of the art or the possible objectification he is himself subjecting these highly fetishized images to. But seeing page after page, the message of appreciating humans in all their shapes, sizes, and colors gets lost in mediocre art and what may well be his own fetishes. Nothing wrong with the fetishes, but simply changing fetishes in the public eye from too skinny and always white to overly sexualized but more common shapes is a move laterally, not upward. Combined with such a repetitive and only so-so artistic ability, this collection is just not worth the time.
