Louis Nizer was a very high reputation lawyer, on the Civil side of the legal profession. His memoir concerns several of most high profile civil cases of the 1940's and the 1950's. He was often concerned with cases of censorship and of libel and defamation, usually in the area of civil rights and freedom of speech. The book is quite readable, and is certainly informative.

Nizer is blowing his own horn here, as well he should -the guy was a master at his craft. An interesting slice of history mid-20th century history as well. I wonder what he would have made of Depp v Heard...?

757. My Life in Court, by Louis Nizer (read 8 Dec 1963) While I was aware of how biased in his own favor Nizer was, I know I greatly enjoyed this book in which he tells how smart he was and tells why he was so successful when he was and how wrong the other side was when he was unsuccessful

1491 The Jury Returns, by Louis Nizer (read 16 July 1978) This book tells of four cases the author handled: Paul Crump, a reformed murderer; a divorce case; a criminal case involving Roy Fruehauf; and the John Henry Faulk case. The Faulk case takes up half the book, and while it was a great triumph for Nizer, I found it boring at times. Other lawyers' triumphs are interesting but Louis Nizer galls me: he is so perfect, to hear him tell it.
