Because the topic of Crusades is a complex subject, it is extremely helpful to have overview to keep from getting lost in the details. This book covers the time leading up to the Crusades through its aftereffects, and is followed by an at-a-glance timeline. In typical DK style, the layout is crowded, and unfortunately suffers from a variety of font sizes within the main text, but it is also packed with great visuals, including maps, illustrations, and pictures of artifacts. There is so much going on visually that it is easy to get overwhelmed, but it is organized so that there are multiple options for interacting with the text. The reader can get a basic overview by reading the main narrative, go deeper by reading the informational sidebars and illustration notes, or refer to the index to brush up on a specific topic. The layout may feel as overwhelming as the topic itself, but it is a great compact reference to have on hand.… (meer)
