Rose Pender

Rose Pender, actually, Lady Rose Pender of England, spent four months in 1883 visiting the United States. This slim volume contains her journal of the trip from the time she and her companions landed in New York City through their train travel to California, and then the return trip across much of the West by buckboard and wagon. While her opinions may sometimes offend a modern reader, she is remarkably open and adventuress given the contemporary mindset of upper class travelers.
