I used the book "I Can" when I taught a guided reading group earlier in the semester. The sentences are not very syntactically complex so it was pretty easy for the students to read. The pictures in the book show what the sentences are saying so if a child does not know a word, he or she can figure out what it says by looking at the pictures. At the end of the lesson, I had the students write a sentence and draw a picture using one of the verbs from the text. The group of students that I used this text with was the "struggling readers" group and some of them struggled with the idea of using the pictures to figure out what the words said. This book should most likely be used with younger, lower-lever students. I would definitely use this book in the future because I think it is a great example to use to teach students that they can look at the pictures when they are reading to help them figure out what the text says.… (meer)
