- Virgilia Peterson was born in New York City, a daughter of Dr. Frederick Peterson. She married as her third husband Prince Paul Sapieha, a Polish aristocrat, with whom she had two children and lived in Poland for six years. She was known at that time as Princess Paul Sapieha. She left Poland just before Nazi Germany invaded the country in World War II. The couple divorced in 1950. She wrote the memoir Polish Profile (1940) and A Matter of Life and Death (1962), and served as the moderator of an episode of the ABC-TV panel show Author Meets the Critics in 1952.
