A great find for those who love background on western history and insight into how easy it was to change identity then. As a "half-breed" Wyandot from a prominent family of that tribe, he worked dangerous jobs on the Frontier, a teamster or driver on trading expeditions and Bison killing and identified with the White culture in brushes with Native tribes. He adopted an alias in Canada and claimed European heritage on his documents, but reverted to his original name and tribal identity when back in the states to claim benefits. His human flaws made him a man of his time and the author does a good job of researching details claimed in Mudeater's autobiography.… (meer)
