H. Pueyo is an Argentine-Brazilian writer of speculative fiction who occasionally ventures in the realm of comics, translations and other literary genres. Her work is often influenced by her multicultural and multilingual background, her experiences as a child immigrant, and her life-long struggles with trauma, C-PTSD and chronic pain.

Table of Contents:

Read:
~ "Sea-Crowned" / Coroa do mar - 4* -

Wow. That gets dark and looking at the author's bio you can't help but think, it's not any darker than what some people have had to endure in the non-fiction world.

A merfolk child, who along with her brother, were "rescued" after their merfolk family was murdered by maybe the Navy or some group that has people of rank. The brother could almost pass for human so he was allowed to roam but the female, whose heritage was obvious, was forever locked in a house. The female sibling is the narrator of the story and it starts with her as a young girl but continues into young adulthood.

The author put together an interesting story. So much so that I will be looking for other work and keeping an eye on them.

For those that need trigger warnings: child captivity, sibling incest,
this one is part of ending so extra spoilery!!! being trapped in a cage and left for dead

(I listened on Podcastle before this book was published)

~ "A Letter, Unfolding" / A carta desdobra -

A bit above my reading skill but I hope to read everything they have written.

hmmm, memory triggers: A man who seems to be in prison inside an envelope, sees his future wife in the next cell/envelope. She doesn't know him yet so there is some time distortion. They are both suffering somehow.

(I read on 580split.org before this book was published)

~ "Memory-eater" / O comedor de memórias - gave it start but ugh, I'm lost. Will re-try sometime.
Opens with: "Every day he digs the same grave, and every day he leaves it untouched, a grave as deep as himself. And he digs. He digs. He digs. He will keep digging until his work is done, and it might take years—too many years.

To read:
"Rabbit’s Foot" / Pé de coelho
"Juan Clemente's Well" / O poço de Juan Clemente
"A Study in Ugliness" / Estudo em feiura
"Saligia" / Saligia
"The Diamond Family Glitters" / O brilho dos Diamantes
"The People vs. Nadia Marijuán" / Todos contra Nadia Marijuán
"An Open Coffin" / Caixão aberto

I listened to the PodCastle version narrated by Kaitlyn Zivanovich, offered here: https://podcastle.org/2020/09/15/podcastle-644-sea-crowned/

Author said: "Cocoon" is probably (hopefully) my last piece about dementia, written a little before my grandmother died this year. It's a short, final goodbye...

The author conveys the true and dark experience of watching her grandmother "disappear" and transform.
I love and am envious of the ability of author's to take true human experiences and memorialize it in a fiction form.
I bet her grandmother would love the story.

Read it here: rel="nofollow" target="_top">http://strangehorizons.com/fiction/cocoon/

I felt this part deeply:
“Try to rest,” I said as she tried to struggle. “You will feel better soon.”

She didn’t. I want to believe she could have fought it somehow. That she could have made her own decisions. This is the kind of trick my mind plays on me: she could have enjoyed her time out of the cocoon if it wasn’t for me telling her to rest. She could have set the pupa on fire if I didn’t convince her to sleep.
