Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon collects Hawkeye (2012) #1-5 and Young Avengers Presents (2008) #6.

In this volume, Hawkeye deals with a rent increase, steals from thieves who steal from thieves, and has to do some work to get an incriminating tape back. There's also a flashback to Kate Bishop as Hawkeye trying to prove herself to the real Hawkeye.

I used to read a lot of Mavel and DC comics, but that was decades ago. I haven't even been keeping up with the Marvel movies very well. I don't think I've ever read or watched anything with Kate Bishop in it. Basically, I'm probably not the best person to be reviewing this. That said, I think I picked this up because I read somewhere that that Matt Fraction's writing was good and that this was a decent starting place for Hawkeye comics newbies mostly familiar with the Marvel movie universe.

I enjoyed the volume's flashes of humor, and I particularly liked David Aja's artwork. I felt a bit lost in terms of the timeline (the volume's events were shuffled some and I didn't immediately realize this), character relationships, and situation. There was no context/explanation given for the period of time that Kate apparently spent pretending to be Hawkeye. And who was Eli?

Hawkeye spent a good chunk of this volume getting beaten up as he reminded readers that he has no superpowers, just skill (and some trick arrows). Still, he managed to get himself back up and functional pretty well considering some of what he went through. I appreciated the bit about the dog he desperately tried to save after it helped him.

The front and back covers include a guide telling readers which volumes to read after this one. I don't feel particularly compelled to continue on, but I appreciate the existence of the guide all the same.

Highly-recommended mainstream comics always end up being underwhelming for me. This was readable, which is better than most superhero comics (boring as fuuuuck; somehow both fractally complicated and also you can't get too invested in any of the details because they get trashed the instant an author gets bored), but nothing fascinating and definitely not worth the hype.

Pretty fun star and I actually find the art quite charming. #5 and #6 were pretty painful though (artwise).

My second comic book ever. I really enjoyed this; now I want more Hawkeye! I'm a (very) casual Marvel fan, and I appreciate the stories more than the blood/action, so I was kind of nervous picking this up (yeah my first comic book was Wolverine... definitely regret that). But I enjoyed it. I picked this up after watching the Disney series a few weeks ago. Read it in under an hour, because I couldn't wait to find out what happened in the next one.

A lot of fun - a take on the dysfunctional hero with a heart of gold. Like a good-natured noir. Definitely makes for one of the more interesting supes. I mostly liked the stylizeed art - Aja starts off doing an impression of Batman Year One-era Mazzucchelli, though he switches his style around a bit, and other artists are less successful - which fits the overstylized writing well. It's not perfect, and occasionally feels like Fraction is trying a bit too hard. But good diverting fun.

Like many of the comics on my shelves, I read this in single issues, but I figured as I did read it, I should add it as a book I read this year! (It almost feels like cheating, which is silly, because it's the same amount of reading as if I'd read it in the TPB!)

This was kind of made for me being a comic book written by a lawyer about a super-hero lawyer. And it delivers, for sure. Great story, great characters and lots of fun. The random "girl with umbrella" in Jen's building is my Harvey & Janet. I want a series about whatever it is she does out of her office because she seems super adorable and badass.

Just remembered (from reading a friend's review) that the art is atrocious in issues 5&6 so, if you're going to read this, be warned of that. The first 4 issues are beautiful though.

Still deciding if I enjoy super hero comic books, but this was definitely one that would make me try another. Very fun read.

A super fun volume! I love all the cameos from other Marvel characters popping in and out of the various stories and cases. Soule's background as a lawyer really makes this volume shine as he's able to bring in real legal concepts to the stories being told. The lawyerin' dramatics are exciting and interesting and are by far my favorite sections of this run. The mystery of the blue file has been solved, and I found it to be a satisfying conclusion. Pulido's art has also grown on me. I wish this run could have continued on.

Enjoyable! I liked the combination of super-heroing and lawyering. The Daredevil cameo was fun, given that Soule goes on to Daredevil after this. The art, both Pulido's and Wimberly's, was sadly not to my taste. I think it was fine, just not a style I personally enjoy.

Graphic Novel Book Club - March 2016, 2nd:

Still a gorgeous piece and I loved getting to watch new people read this one. Especially in the wake of so many people knowing all about this character through the movies only.

August 2013:
Definitely interesting. We're in grunge-esque-noir art, location, and storytelling. This is definitely the story of a man who is a hero, who isn't a hero, who is a hero. And we're asked to look at all three of those racked up right next to each other. It's very much an 'everyman' take on the whole concept and I have to admit this book may bring back the love of this character I once had but was quashed over the last year or so.

I'm definitely loving Clint, Pizza Dog, Kate, the tenants, the style. I do not mind the "this looks bad" repetition that someone people are saying is being taken too far. I want to know so much about where this series might be going, and what it might show us. I'm in for the long haul of a few graphic novels at the outset I think, even just playing catch-up to the rest of the world on the highest rated books that have seen fanfare and Eisner's.

Another re-read as I'm presently on a Nightwing/Oracle kick because of the Convergence release. I went back to the retconned beginning of these two and their burgeoning relationship. This one was serious and adorable. Alfred is pitch perfect, and Bruce & Dick are beautiful growing into each other. Jim totally owns my heart for comments to Batman about dropping him off a building if he gets Robin hurt, and for the comments to Robin about how he will never have a chance with his daughter.

So much grinning was achieved by this.

Loved it. This is the first Avengers-related comic I've ever read, so I don't know if it's just Matt Fraction's take on the character or if Hawkeye is always so snarky and fun. Clint (Hawkeye) and Kate Bishop (also Hawkeye, the details of which I only partially understand) are great characters both when they're working together and when they're working alone. I liked the art too-there was a strong sense of movement for the action scenes, and this book is action-packed.

Looking forward to reading more!

3.5 stars

I picked this up because I thought the TV series was really funny, and I wanted to see what the comics were like. It was pretty good, with a decent amount of humor and action, but sometimes it was hard to figure out the order of the panels and what all was happening in the action scenes. I’m intrigued by the blue file storyline and hope to find out more in the next issue.

i remember being surprised at how much i liked the batgirl story as a kid: i was looking for badass comics of heroes like batman, dudes that kicked ass. batgirl was like, the lame 2nd tier sidekick in the shitty movie in my head. but this was very likeable.

the robin story is fine

I did not like Nightwing Year One so I didn't have high hopes for this but I would read more of both of these.

My wife outright disliked this book, and so I read it with low expectations -- but I actually got a fair bit out of it. The main stories are pretty good. The protagonist's occupation as a lawyer is used well to tell different, yet engaging stories. The dialogue is at times a bit trite, but to my (admittedly not that refined) ear, it was mostly fine.

Where the book falters, unfortunately, is the art. At best, it's efficient and clear, but that's not always the case, and even then it does not look good at all. The main artist's work is flat, anonymous and frankly reminding me of the look of small, self-published webcomics more than anything else, and when there is a brief intermission with a different artist, it looks as though they just discovered perspective and are more interested in playing with that (with varying success) than in telling the story. I'm not very picky about comic artwork, but this was definitely not my thing.

So I suppose it's a credit to Soule that I still got quite a lot out of this. I particularly thought Captain America's court case was rather great, and the Kristoff Vernard story -- while a bit silly -- worked very well, too. I enjoyed the end twist of the "blue file" case that was lurking in the background throughout the run, though as usual it was hindered by the artwork. While it was shallow as stories go, I also enjoyed the insane Deadpool appearance in the first of two bonus comics included in the collection, though I found the final bonus story -- a Christmas special -- to be corny and after school special-y, even by Christmas story standards. But the main story was as mentioned pretty great, and I like that they included these for completism even if they were a bit on the gimmicky side.
