Devil's Candy Volume 1 by Rem is a great fantasy manga with lots of action and intrigue.

The world building is super interesting, especially when you add in the amazing illustrations. I think the premise is really cool - Pandora was built to be a companion but now they're getting into some real shenanigans. I would have liked a little more character information or development. We got thrown into the action and I wasn't entirely sure who was who and why they were there.

Overall, this is a fun manga read! I'm really glad I got to pick up a copy.

Three out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

This was a sad DNF. I really thought I would love this book. I do like the art and it’s a supernatural tale. That part I liked, however, one of our main characters makes himself a girl. Very much Weird Science movie vibes. When they made this girl, he made her mindless. She can harm and do battle, but has no thoughts or knowledge of her own. She is an empty vessel for them to do with as they please. I don’t like that. Tt just turned me off, and I do not care to ever finish this book, let alone read any sequels.

This volume has gotten a great deal darker though it opens with a chaotic game of basically keep-away until an egg hatched.

I like the story best when it focuses on Kazu, Pandora, Nemo, and Hitomi. A bunch of new characters were introduced and a side character got the spotlight, but I didn’t care too much for it. The artwork is still excellent as usual, but when so much is going on it can get confusing.

I picked this up purely for the art (the gorgeous linework! the fancy dresses! everyone's delicate eyelashes!) but the story is so fun and funny, plus I love Alexia and Lord Maccon's interactions so much that I am actually going to read the novel. So this manga did a pretty good job as promotion for the book series.

The story zips along quite fast as it's a manga adaptation of a full-length novel, and I felt there were tons of things that were left vague or unexplained. For example, just what does it mean to be soulless? As far as I can tell, it really doesn't affect Alexia's life that much aside from being able to neutralize supernatural abilities. Lots of things about the setting aren't really explained either, but the story is still understandable regardless.

I love love love the character designs for basically all the major characters and the artist did such an expressive and beautiful job with the artwork. I want to read the rest of the manga for sure, but I have also already picked up the Soulless novel.

This book krumped all over the place with its creativity and how quirky it is. Loved the humor, the characters (Nemo’s my favorite), and artwork too. Pandora is fun. I think watching her humanity… uh devilishness grow will be interesting.

Devils Candy plays with common manga tropes but repackages it in a fresh way. The juxtaposition of the cutesy art style with the eldritch horrors everywhere is great. There are info dumps packaged at the end of each chapter, and, at times, the panels get so overloaded with (beautiful) artwork it's hard to decipher what's going on. There are also some occult references, which I don't care for, but it adds to the worldbuilding.

I would definitely read more of this series.

Loved it. I loved the original books sooo much, and as soon as I saw there was a manga adaption I knew I had to read it. I loved having a visual to one of my favorite series. I have all three that were made and will be reading the next 2 as well.

The art was of course beautiful, and as with the rest of the books I love having a visual for this story. It's to bad they didn't make the last two books as well. This book was my least favorite of the series, and still is. Alexia was treated very badly in my opinion and she had done nothing to deserve it. I do like that this story does help explain some of the questions that have formed over the series, so that is always good. This marks the end of the parasol protectant series for me. I will be continuing on with some of the spin-off books though.

Another great manga. I love revisiting one of my favorite series and being about to see faces to the characters. 2 down and 1 to go. It really is to bad they didn't finish the series though. It would have been great to see all the book done as a graphic novel adaption.

This adaptation of Gail Carriger's Soulless is surprisingly entertaining, with a lot of lovely art and a script that gives the original work a fresh look for a new audience of readers. If you have not gotten on the teapunk bandwagon, then now is the time to do so!

You can soon read my proper review of this graphic novel over at my blog: http://nagareboshi-reviews.blogspot.com/

Works really well as a manga too. Would be even better if it was all in color instead of just the first pages.

I realized I had read volume 1 of this manga, but not volume 2. I couldn't remember why, so I checked it out from the library.

Now I remember why. I should have checked my Goodreads review first.

This vampire story is okay. It's a teenage story - high school goth chick dates a vampire. He's perfect and gorgeous. But - there's all of his creepy cousins who are out to do really bad things.

I see I likened this to Twilight. And I didn't like Twilight.

Okay, if I can remember, I will not read volume 3.

(I'll forget that, of course, and a few years from now I'll be picking up volume 3 at the library going - "Wow! Vampires!")

Sometimes I have this weird habit of starting manga and graphic novels with the wrong volume. This time, I started with the second volume, but was quickly able to pick up what was going on in the story. While certainly interesting, the book didn't really grab my attention until about halfway through. Though not something I want to purchase, or re-read, I look forward to reading the rest of the story.

I haven't even read this yet but it gets 4 stars because the art is so awesome.

Now I have read it, any the story works so much better for me as a comic.

The other two volumes of this do a good job of adapting the book to the visual medium of the manga. This one...not so much. I just feel that so much was edited that it would be hard to follow if you hadn't already read the books.

On the other hand, the chapter illustrations are amazing, so...mixed bag there.

Cute story, a bit too brief for the cost. It felt like half a book. Great drawing and the characters has promise.

Loved it! Except for the ending, but I didn't like the ending of the book either. Sigh. When is Volume 3 going to be coming out? I simply cannot wait!

A delightfully witty manga version of Gail Carriger's novel "Soulless". It was everything that the wonderful book was....but with pictures to boot! It is both a great introduction to the series and an excellent addendum for those who are already familiar with the Parasol Protectorate Series of novels. I simply cannot wait for Vol. #2!
