I came to this volume with a slim knowledge of Renger-Patzsch, and even that was primarily of his photographs and not his ideas. I came away with not only a better understanding and appreciation of his work, but a much better understanding of theories of photography as well. Reading the book description, I thought I would enjoy looking at the overlap between photography and modernist literature and film, areas I have more knowledge of. I got that but so much more. Between his ideas and critiques, coupled with my online pursuit of some of what he referenced, I received an education in the history of photography, or at least part of that history.
While some of his commentary was wasted on me (my photography experience is purely amateur and largely that of a tourist or family moment documenter) most of it was readily accessible even to a neophyte like me. It helped that I could relate some ideas to debates and controversies that had occurred in areas I had more familiarity with. Even more fun for me was the number of photographers and photographs I was introduced to. While my knowledge still lags far behind those who study art and/or photography, I know that I have made great strides in filling in some of my gaps.
Highly recommended for both those well-versed in photography and those, like myself, who want to learn and appreciate more about the art and the history. I would imagine that those who are very familiar with Renger-Patzsch's work but maybe not so much with his ideas and writings will gain a whole new appreciation.
