Hershey bars have been a staple in our family for as long as I can remember. In fact, my dad always told folks that Hershey and Pepsi aided in his good health and longevity. My brothers and I could count on a Hershey bar in our stocking at Christmas and later, miniatures at Halloween and kisses at Easter. When I heard about the picture book A Big, Big, Dream by Michael Scott Roberts based on the life of Milton Hershey, I just had to read it!

Roberts shows promise in his first picture book for young children. A Big, Big Dream chronicles the life of the famous chocolate maker, Milton Hershey, from his early days growing up in Derry Church, Pennsylvania to the opening of the Milton Hershey School with his wife Catherine. Not enough detail for a report, but a pleasant look at the life of this hard working man.

A wonderful addition to the book is the song, also by Michael Scott Roberts which can be downloaded from his website. The lyrics run across the top of the pages of the book and are both catchy and informative. Altogether, a nice introduction to this chocolatier’s life. Useful in units on community helpers, perseverance, or biographies.

This is a story about a book about one person's journey to reach his "big, big dream". You learn a little more about the man behind the corporation, Mr. Milton Hershey, and taste a bit of the sweetness entwined there-in. The beautiful illustrations combined with an uplifting, difficult yet inspiring story makes this the perfect book for any age reader. The additional add in of not only a downloadable narration of the story but an accompanying song that follows the lyrics along the top of each page give this just the extra touch to stand out all the more.
