"I am exceedingly disappointed in this essay. It was written to counteract the enthusiasm of the Methodists. It is a good antidote against Antinomianism, but removes few of the difficulties respecting the meaning of the word faith. I have learned, by repeated disappointments, not to form expectations of a work which I have heard commended and seen often quoted." - Journal, January 1805.
