A cross-section of people living in northern California deal with climate crisis in A Fire So Wild by Sarah Ruiz-Grossman. From wealthy homeowners Abby and Taylor, to middle-class Gabriel and his ex-wife, to Sunny and Willow living in their van, Ruiz-Grossman tries to cover a lot of territory that results in cliched characters and predictable plot points. A quick read, A Fire So Wild may appeal to YA readers looking for a book about climate change and California wild fires.

“...why, when everything burns, not everyone is left with scars?” What if everything you had went up in flames? Would it be a devastating loss or would it be a chance to break free and start over?
This is a short novel that covers a lot of ground, from the effects of climate change on a community to the ways those who are already struggling end up paying the highest price. There’s some environmental politics in it but overall that doesn’t detract from the story itself or from the characters. The blurb on Goodreads compares it to Disappearing Earth (I can see why) and to Little Fires Everywhere, which I’m adding to my TBR list since I wanted this to be longer. My thanks to GR giveaways and the publisher for an advance copy to review.… (meer)
