Joyce Rupp shares her own midlife journey—its ups and downs—with such honesty and insight that you will surely identify with and benefit from the discoveries she has made along the way. Among them we can find wisdom in the wounds we've carried from birth onward, and these wounds can heal; past regrets must be let go lest they cling to us and drain our energy for life; the loving part of us can always out-wrestle the hating part; surprises of beauty and talent in us wait to be discovered and shared; some of what we thought to be unbreakable truth is now shattered pottery and unmendable; and our struggle to name God and to find a spirituality that enlivens and enriches our existence is less complex than we first thought.

A book about "the experiences of leaving behind and moving on, the stories of union and separation that are written in all our hearts." Praying Our Goodbyes is about the "spirituality of change." A book for anyone who has experienced loss, whether it be a job change, the death of a loved one, a financial struggle, a mid-life crisis, or an extended illness. Designed to help readers recognize, ritualize, reflect on, and reorient themselves.

In this popular book, bestselling author Joyce Rupp encourages the reader to approach a painful, inner hindrance as a help rather than a hindrance to personal growth. This new volume, revised and expanded, offers additional chapters as well as a study guide and prayers for personal reflection.

"We long for connections in the midst of disconnected lives - connections to ourselves, to others, to the world we live in. Most of all, we yearn to connect with the sacred. In The Circle of Life, Joyce Rupp and Macrina Wiederkehr invite us to listen carefully and closely to the wisdom of each season. Using reflections, poems, prayers, and meditations, they explore the relationship between the seasons of the earth and the seasons of our lives. The Circle of Life encourages readers to connect their experience of the unfolding seasons with inner spiritual growth and movement, and to know that the presence of God is within and around us all"--Publisher's description.

A friends-of-the-library book sale find. Joyce Rupp isa nun and a popular writer of Christian Spirituality. My Soul Feels Lean are her collected poems about the experience of loss and restoration. Loss is grief, aging, loneliness, etc. Restoration is joy in the brokenness. The first poems are set in the cold, dreary winter. The Restoration poems are spring, Easter, resurrection poems (or point to it).

As a whole I think her part one poems (Loss) are stronger. They point towards owning and facing the pain and hardship fully (instead of ignoring it). But there are some restoration poems I quite liked.

Thoughtful writing about finding inner wisdom and guidance for one's life. Each chapter begins with a poem and concludes with a summary of the lesson and suggestions for putting it into practice in your life. The main part of the chapter relates a specific theme to Rupp's observations and experiences in her own life. She frequently refers to quotations from the Old Testament of the Bible, so there is a definite Christian slant to the writing.
On my second reading, I skipped the suggestions for practice, and glossed over the biblical references. There was still plenty for appreciation.

Worth re-reading before making the pilgrimage, but can be easily found or borrowed, does not need to occupy permanent shelf space - especially considering the author's insights about lightening one's life load at home and not only on the Camino.

A mismash of a book of religious stuff with great black and white drawings of cups. I was about to trash it, when I realized I hav e a 10 years' collection of souvenir Atlanta cups all arranged together in my kitchen. Exactly where it belongs and it will go there. I dip intothe mishmash

"It is time for me to cherished the unwanted" p. 68. So, yes, it will stay for awhile.

For the right audience, this book might well be helpful and insightful. It was simply not the right book for me.

I've been interested in reading accounts of people who have walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Although this is one of the best in conveying the details of what such a pilgrimage might look like on the ground, the structure of the book make it less interesting than it could have been. This is a book that will give you a very good idea of what to expect on the Camino, but not much in the way of motivation to make the pilgrimage yourself.

Using the traditional seven sorrows of Mary (prophecy of Simeon, flight into Egypt, Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus carrying his cross, standing beneath the cross of Jesus, receiving Jesus' dead body, Jesus being laid in the tomb), Rupp (The Cup of Our Life) asks readers to meet their own sorrows in Mary's journey. For example, when she discusses the flight into Egypt, she notes, "Sometimes it is better not to run or flee from our 'Herods.' Sometimes we need to stay and do battle. We never know what price our freedom will be until we have taken the step away for our 'Herod' toward our new land." Each chapter ends with poems, meditations, guided imagery and questions for personal reflection or group discussion. Rupp's writing challenges the faithful to get beyond their comfortable spirituality and find strength in their times of suffering.

From the publisher ~ The Cup of Our Life helps anyone seeking a more intimate and disciplined life of prayer. Rupp illustrates how the ordinary cups used each day can become sacred vessels that connect readers with life and bring them into closer union with the Divine. She explores how the cup is a rich symbol of life, with its emptiness and fullness, its brokenness and flaws, and its many blessings. With daily devotions for six weeks, this book is ideal for individual usage as well as group usage in parish settings, religious communities, and small Christian communities.
