Nora Saltonstall was just 23 when she left her privileged, upper-class life in Boston for volunteer service in France during the Great War. She worked at canteens and dispensaries in Paris and eventually was assigned to a mobile surgical hospital on the western front. Nora was not a nurse, but rather a volunteer who did just about anything she was assigned, including driving and repairing ambulances. Europe was not unfamiliar territory to Nora, she had attended school in Paris and had traveled extensively in Europe, and her love for the continent made her all the more determined to help in whatever way she could. Nora was anti-suffrage because of the close association between suffrage activists and the women who came to the forefront of the peace movement at the outbreak of World War I. Nora accepted an assignment with the Red Cross Bureau for Refugees and went to Paris. Nora survived the war and returned home to Boston. She died in 1919 from typhoid while on a cross country vacation/camping trip with family and friends.… (meer)
