Felix Scheinberger

Felix Scheinberger was born on 14 October 1969 in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). Drums were more important to him than schooling. Instead of finishing high school, he played in punk bands until he was 22 years old. He studied illustration, which then seamlessly resulted in self-employment. In the toon meer past ten years, he has illustrated more than fifty books, worked for prestigious newspapers and collected various prizes and awards. He has also taught in Mainz, Hamburg, Mnster (Germany) and Jerusalem (Israel). His previous publications have influenced design agencies to rediscover hand-rendered drawing as well as pencil and watercolours. Felix Scheinberger now lives in Berlin and is a professor of illustration at the University of Applied Arts, Mnster. toon minder

In theory, I wanted to try sketching from real-life, but found it more interesting to learn about than to do. Scheinberger explains the good and bad of going out in cold and heat, among people who may like to be sketched, or not.
This is a book for people that are serious about becoming an illustrator as a profession.
The first part is mostly a pep talk (that also happens near the end) and the realities of working in the field. On page 58 to 62 there are some quick tips about color and perspective. The second part is a bit of information about each material used to create illustrations with a bit of history in the middle. The last part is the longest and it consists of tips to start a career as an illustrator. It has information about pricing and how to gather clients, etc. Since my book was translated in Brazilian Portuguese these are tips according to Brazil. The examples of prices would be different for me, but that is not a fault of the book.
I must say that I thought this book would have more information about the process of creating an illustration, but that is not what it's about at all. However, I still found it interesting and I thought the idea of gathering a lot of artists with different styles to draw birds was really cool. I liked looking at all of the different styles and I liked knowing about the origin of the materials I use. Overall, I ended up enjoying it even though it wasn't really what I was looking for.… (meer)

This is by far the best book on watercolor sketch techniques that I have read in the last year. The word urban in the title is something of a misnomer, because the book is for more broad than sketching on site. The book is a broad discussion of watercolor as an art technique, and is more thoughtful and deep than any that I've read on the subject. At the same time, it is applicable engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering or pursuing watercolor painting as part of their artistic and creative endeavor… (meer)

Und dieses Buch refklektiert, was ich immer dachte: jeder kann es schaffen.
Ich fotografiere und ab sofort werde ich auch skizzieren: jene Momente, die man nur mit dem Auge fotografieren kann!
Vom Papier, Format bis hin zu bestimmten Situationen, alles Notwendige und Inspirierende steht in diesem Buch: ich habe einfach angefangen zu zeichnen.
Ein Tipp:
"Beginnen sie ihr Skizzenbuch nicht vorne auf der ersten Seite. Seite 17 ist die beste. Starten Sie ihr Buch irgendwo in der Mitte und arbeiten sie nicht chronologisch."
Warum sich Kugelschreiber besonders gut eignen und zeichnerisch preiswert sind, steht auf Seite 31!
Schön, so schön diese Formulierung:
"Eine Skizze ist nicht nur eine Abbildung der Wirklichkeit. Eine Skizze ist ein Stück Zeit."
